China Media Group (CMG), formally established on April 19, 2018, is one of the largest media conglomerates in the world. It was created through the merger of China Central Television (incorporating China Global Television Network), China National Radio, and China Radio International. CMG operates a vast broadcasting network and has built up a comprehensive audio-visual archive containing some three million hours of material. Each day it produces around 1,000 hours of TV programmes and 4,500 hours of radio and online audio content. Xinwen Lianbo, the national prime-time evening news broadcast, attracts an average daily audience of 120 million. Among CMG’s special productions is the annual Spring Festival Gala, a visual spectacular that in 2020 was watched by 1.232 billion people in China and overseas, of whom 606 million accessed it via new media platforms, and generated a record 26.1 billion cross-media clicks.
